The earliest documented school in Whitehills (Parish of Boyndie) was a public school which was operating in 1879, built by the school board at the time. This school is the first recorded formal establishment (as it is known right now) to serve the educational needs of children in the village. The original school had a capacity of 190 pupils, but its average attendance was around 163. The school received a funding grant of around £124 (pounds) and 4s (shillings) a year. This would be around £8000 in today's money.

Secondary education provision had always been established in Banff since the late 1800s, however provision for children in Whitehills became more transitioned by the 1960s with most secondary aged pupils going to Banff Academy following their transition year at Macduff School.

By the 1960s-1970s, the original Victorian school structure at Whitehills was no longer considered fit for purpose. A new school building was constructed on Forbes Road in 1976 (opening in 1977), which is where the current primary school now resides. Since its opening in 1977 the school has under gone some changes, with an extended front reception area, office and new community space (now operated as a nurture/ play room).

Despite the demolition of the old building, the new school building still holds many memories and artefacts from its predecessor. In 2021 the old school bell from the original Victorian building was rediscovered and was carefully restored through a community funded project. Additionally, echoes of old prize giving ceremonies were discovered from old school display boards.
